Maskne Guide

Learn about maskne prevention and how to fight the unwanted side effects of mask wearing!

Over the last year masks have been introduced into our lives, and look like they are here to stay. Even with the vaccine(s) it is best practice to continue to wear them for the safety of others. So, choose your favorite masks and settle in… but what does this mean for my skin?

When we wear masks heat and moisture accumulates, which disrupts our natural microbiome and promotes the growth of unfriendly microbes that contribute to acne breakouts and irritation. If all of that wasn’t enough, if the mask is worn for several hours, it may rub your skin and further increase irritation. This is how MASKNE happens.

In order to prevent this and help the skin tackle this new situation, we may need to change our skin care habits. The most important thing is to thoroughly wash, moisturize and strengthen the natural protective barrier of the skin.

Stick with us as we have prepared a surprise...

#1 Wash your face two times daily

- in the morning and evening or as soon as possible after wearing a mask. This will remove impurities and sweat caused by excessive heat and moisture as well as the excess of sebum that can lead to clogged pores. It is important to gently cleanse the skin without irritation, which can contribute to further skin issues.

{save}’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a good choice here, as it is gentle thanks to the plant derived cleansing agent betaine. You won’t find any SLS in the formula, so it does not irritate the skin, leaving it supple and elastic, while hydrating thanks to all-natural trehalose and corn bioferment.

#2 Exfoliate once or twice per week

with {save}’s Gentle Gommage Exfoliator. With hydrating shea butter and corn bioferment, and soothing Matcha, this is a very gentle way to get rid of dead skin cells and refresh the appearance of your complexion without irritating the skin further. The natural exfoliation process needs support as it may be disturbed due to long term mask wearing.

#3 Use moisturizing products with probiotics

Look for the best natural hydrating ingredients such as Trehalose and Shea Butter – both can be found in our lightweight creams: Rejuvenating Moisturizer and Ultra-light Moisturizer. Also Ectoin and Squalane are deeply hydrating – both included in the Anti-pollution Moisturizer that has thicker texture.

Your moisturizer should also have repairing skin barrier properties. Remember the importance of keeping this first line of defense strong – think of using products with a microbiome complex such as Duo-Biotic Complex. This extremely gentle complex of prebiotics and probiotics will support your skin’s microbiome - the natural and beneficial microbial flora, which can be found on the surface of your skin. This complex will preserve the natural defensive barrier of your skin and protect it from damage, keeping your immune system in check and reducing inflammation. Duo-Biotic Complex soothes redness making your skin calm, well balanced, radiant and strong. You will find it in {save}’s Rejuvenating Moisturizer, Ultra-light Moisturizer and Smoothing Eye Cream.

#4 Night regeneration

Additionally, consider a regenerative night treatment that will cocoon your skin, recharge and reinforce it for the next day. We encourage the use of our Anti-Pollution Sleeping Mask. Made with ectoin, this has strengthening and hydrating properties, while gently exfoliates thanks to natural bacillus ferment. Applied in the evening, it will immediately reduce the symptoms of irritation and hypersensitivity, and smooth the epidermis, as it restores the proper level of hydration and soothes the skin.

In general, stick to the principle of less is more. Remove your mask when safe to do so, allowing your skin to breathe. Leave nourishing and anti-aging creams, concentrated products and heavier masks for the evening when the skin is open to proper absorption. Let's limit makeup. You can't see it anyway, and most of the color cosmetics applied remain on the mask. In addition, all fluids can be comedogenic (clog skin pores) and mixed with heat and sweat can irritate the skin. If we must, stick to eye makeup.

Thank you for being a part of the solution by wearing your mask, and we hope these tips will make it a bit easier to handle! Stay healthy and safe!
